The Financial Benefits of Chiropractic Care

The main reasons people decide to visit the doctor’s office are because they are in pain or because they are sick. Unfortunately, many people do not make their health a priority until it’s too late and they are already injured or ill.

The power of preventative medicine is incredible and important. In fact, focusing on preventative healthcare measures can actually save you money and increase your work productivity. Studies show that by making preventative health care a priority, the economic impact of disease is lessened, and the length and quality of life for people is better!

According to the United States Surgeon General, here are some examples as to why preventative health is financially wise:

  • a 5 percent reduction in the prevalence of hypertension would save $25 billion in just 5 years
  • a 1 percent reduction in weight, blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol risk factors would save between $83-$103 each year in medical costs, per person
  • increasing the use of preventative services to include tobacco cessation screenings, alcohol abuse screenings, and aspirin use to just 90 percent of the recommend levels could save as much as $3.7 billion each year in medical costs
  • in work places with work place wellness programs, individual medical costs are reduced by approximately $3.27 for every dollar spent on the wellness program
  • if we could reduce the average population’s sodium intake from 3,400 mg to 2,300 mg per day, it could save nearly $18 billion in health care costs each year
  • asthma, high blood pressure, smoking, and obesity are responsible for reducing annual productivity per person for an average of $200-440 each year
  • the Milken Institute found that just a modest reduction in avoidable health risk factors could lead to an economic gain of more than $1 trillion for the economy by 2023

Chiropractic as Preventative Health Care

At Pure Chiropractic, located in Howell, Michigan, we know that chiropractic is an incredible, natural, safe, and effective form of preventative health care. Chiropractic looks to identify the cause of your symptoms. Once the cause is identified, chiropractic treats the ailment at its source. Modern medicine only treats the symptoms themselves.

Symptoms are your body’s way of telling you that something isn’t working as it should or that something is wrong. Every symptom has a cause. It is Dr. Chris and Krystal Hohn’s job to identify the cause of the symptoms and then correct it through chiropractic care!

Sometimes the causes are easy to identify. Sitting in a stiff office chair each day is going to cause back pain. Other times, they are far more difficult to identify. Luckily, Drs. Hohn are experts in the field and know how to do just that!

The activities we put our bodies through each day can often create stress on the spine. This stress can lead to subluxations, or misalignments, in the spine. Often, we do not even know these subluxations exist! Subluxations manifest themselves in a variety of ways.

The spine houses the body’s central nervous system, which is responsible for carrying out every single function in the body. When vertebrae are not in alignment, the communication between the nervous system and the body is interrupted. This leads to a variety of symptoms showing up such as:

  • headaches
  • back pain
  • neck pain
  • sports injuries
  • allergies
  • anxiety
  • colic
  • reflux
  • joint pain
  • asthma
  • depression
  • poor posture
  • trouble sleeping
  • and many more!

By utilizing chiropractic, you can safely, naturally, and effectively treat these common ailments at their source! By maintaining your chiropractic care, you empower your body to function as it should. This is an incredible way to utilize preventative health care. In fact, patients who use chiropractic care regularly experience a reduction in health care costs, hospital stays, doctors visits, and more.

Drs. Chris and Krystal Hohn can correct these misalignments in your spine, and have your body functioning as it should in no time. By performing targeted adjustments to the spine and joints, they will realign the spine. This allows your nervous system to function as it should, and your body to heal itself!

Chiropractic Care is About More than Just Your Back

While it is true that doctors of chiropractic are experts in the spine, the truth is, chiropractic is about far more than just your back. Chiropractic has been proven time and time again to help treat a variety of ailments other than back pain. Chiropractic also helps treat:

  • headaches
  • migraines
  • fibromyalgia
  • arm or leg pain
  • arthritis
  • poor posture
  • pregnancy aches and pains
  • foot pain
  • sleep disorders
  • and much more

Many experts in the medical industry recognize chiropractic as a safe, natural, and effective treatment option for many of life’s aches and pains. It is safe for all ages, from birth and beyond. If you are interested in learning more about how chiropractic can be an amazing preventative healthcare option for your life, please contact Pure Chiropractic today!

The Best Coffee Shops in Michigan

Lewis Black said it well when he stated, “I like coffee because it gives me the illusion that I might be awake.”

Many of us rely on a morning cup of coffee (or two, or three) to get our day started and our minds right. There’s something magical about coffee. Its aroma, the way a warm mug of it brings instant comfort, the ability it has to make any place feel like home.

Some of us believe there’s no better coffee in the world than the cup we brew for ourselves at home. Others of us have our favorite little coffee shop in town that makes our drink *just* the way we like it.

Whether it’s the coffee, the atmosphere, or the simple break from our day, coffee shops have started playing a central role in many people’s lives! At Pure Chiropractic, we did some research of our own to discover the best coffee shops that all of Michigan has to offer. We took into account atmosphere, food, coffee (of course!), speciality drinks, customer service, and more.

As you head off on your end of summer adventures throughout the state of Michigan, keep our list of Michigan’s best coffee shops in mind — you never know when the need for caffeine will strike!

Their baked goods are also to die for. For a deliciously different latte, try the coconut lemongrass latte. This beverage using coconut milk, whole milk (omit if you’re paleo!), agave syrup, and fresh lemongrass, giving the drink a great, earthy combination that will leave you wanting more. Chiropractic Treatment of Headaches

If you’ve ever suffered from a headache, you are not alone. In fact, according to the American Chiropractic Association, none out of 10 Americans suffer from headaches. Some people suffer from frequent headaches, others only have one once in a blue moon. Some headaches are dull and throbbing, others cause pain that brings you to your knees.

Research shows that spinal manipulation and chiropractic adjustments are an effective treatment option for many types of headaches. A report published in 2014 in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT)  stated that interventions commonly used in chiropractic care improved the treatment of acute and chronic neck pain — often associated with headaches. In 2011, the JMPT published a study concluding that chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation, improves migraine and other types of headaches.

Types of Headaches

While there are more than 150 different types of headaches, there are 4 types of headaches that are most common.

Tension: Tension headaches are the most common type of headaches, especially among teenagers and adults. Often, these types of headaches cause mild to moderate pain. They tend to come and go over time. Symptoms of tension headaches may include:

  • Dull, aching pain in the head
  • Pressure and tightness across the forehead
  • Muscle aches or pains along the side and back of your head
  • Neck pain
  • Sensitivity to sound
  • Tenderness along the head and neck

Cluster: While cluster headaches are the least common time, they are certainly the most severe. Intense pain that feels like a burning or piercing feeling behind the eyes is often associated with this type of headache. Cluster headaches tend to occur in groups over a period of time, lasting anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months. Symptoms of cluster headaches may include:

  • Restlessness
  • Agitation
  • Changes in heart rate and blood pressure
  • Sensitivity to light, sound, or smell
  • Horrible pain typically located on one side of the head
  • Pain behind the eye region
  • Radiating pain to the forehead, temple, nose, cheek, or gums of the impacted side
  • Constant burning, throbbing, or piercing pain during the attack

Sinus: Inflamed sinuses can cause plenty of pain. Pain can occur in your cheeks, forehead, and bridge of your nose. Sinus headaches are usually accompanied by a runny nose, fever, and pressure in the ears and head.

Migraine: Migraine headaches can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. These headaches are incredibly painful. Symptoms of migraines include:

  • Sensitivity to light, noise, and smells
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Intense and severe pounding pain on one or both sides of your head
  • Blurred vision
  • Irritability
  • Dizziness or shakiness

Headache Triggers

Headaches are triggered by many different things. Triggers may include foods, noise, lights, stress, lack of sleep, dehydration, exercise, poor posture, etc. According to the American Chiropractic Association, about 5 percent of all headaches are warning signs of a physical problem. The other 95 percent of headaches primary headaches. This means they are either tension, migraine, cluster, or sinus headaches.

Most primary headaches are associated with tension in the neck. This tension may be due to joint irritation, subluxations in the spine, and muscle tension in the neck.

What Can You Do About Your Headaches

There are certain measures that everyone can take to reduce the incidents of headaches.

Do you spend a lot of time in front of a screen? Whether it’s at your computer at the office, on your cell phone, or reading on your iPad, take a break. Holding your head in a fixed position for an extended period of time can lead to headaches. Take a break every 30 minutes and perform stretches that relax your neck and shoulders.

Staying hydrated is also important! Drinking enough water each day is great for your health. Experts recommend drinking half your body weight in ounces each day.

What Can A Doctor of Chiropractic Do

Chiropractors have many scientifically backed approaches to helping headache pain! Doctors of chiropractic have extensive training to help them treat patients far beyond back pain. DCs are experts in how the spine relates to the rest of the body.

Drs. Chris and Krystal Hohn may perform the following if you suffer from primary headaches:

  • Perform an evaluation to identify the source of your headaches
  • Perform chiropractic adjustments to improve nerve function and alleviate stress on the body
  • Offer nutritional advice
  • Recommend exercises and relaxation techniques
  • Offer advice on posture
  • Provide patient education and reassurance
  • Utilize soft tissue therapy
  • Offer rehabilitation and exercise recommendations

Pure Chiropractic Can Help

Drs. Chris and Krystal Hohn are experts in the chiropractic field. At Pure Chiropractic, they put the patients and their needs first!

Headaches impact millions of people each and every day. Drs. Chris and Krystal want to help make headaches a thing of the past for their patients. By performing a physical evaluation, they can determine if any subluxations exist in the spine. After determining the location of any subluxations, they will perform chiropractic adjustments to correct these subluxations.

The goal of these adjustments is to restore the spine to its proper alignment. Since the spine houses the nervous system, it plays a crucial part in the body’s overall function. When the spine is properly aligned, the nervous system can function as it should. This allows the body to function as it should. A properly aligned spine allows the body to harness its innate ability to heal itself.

This not only will help in the prevention and treatment of headaches, but in other ailments and bodily functions as well. Patients who receive regular chiropractic care report:

  • Fewer hospital and doctors visits
  • Increased energy
  • Better sleep
  • Improved posture
  • Increased range of motion
  • Better athletic performance
  • Quickened recovery rates
  • Improved moods
  • Pain relief

Chiropractic Care for Golfers

Did you know that professional and amateur golfers have been using chiropractic care as an integral part of their game for years and years? In fact, Tiger Woods once said, “Being a chiropractic patient has helped me immensely…seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis has made me a better golfer. I’ve been going to chiropractors for as long as I can remember. It’s as important to my training as practicing my swing.”

Today, the majority of PGA level golfers see doctors of chiropractic on a regular basis. In fact, at every stop on the PGA tour, you can find chiropractors working with these professional golfers to help prevent injuries, promote recovery, and improve the golfer’s bodily functions!

You Don’t Have to Be a PGA Golfer to Reap the Benefits of Regular Chiropractic Care for Your Golf Game

You may not be a PGA level golfer — most of us aren’t! But if you’re like me, you are constantly looking for ways to improve your golf game. Research continues to show that chiropractic care is an integral part of improving sports performance, no matter your level of play!

For any sport, it is incredibly important that we take care of our bodies. The risk of injury from repetitive, one-sided motion such as a golf swing is greater among amateur level and weekend warrior golfers. The repetitive torquing of the spine puts stress and load on every joint in the spine, especially the lower back. Not only can this become painful, it can mess up your golf swing and hurt your score!

If you’ve ever strained your back during a golf game, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that 80% of golfers in the United States have experienced some sort of back pain. Some golfers choose to play through the pain, while others end up unnecessarily walking away from the game! Chiropractic can help.

Drs. Chris and Krystal Hohn at Pure Chiropractic, located in Howell, Michigan, are experts in spinal motion. They are also highly trained in restoring proper joint function, reducing irritation to spinal nerves, alleviating pain, and helping golfers prevent further injuries. If left untreated, these repetitive motion injuries lead to long-term issues such as arthritis, joint destruction, tendonitis, bulging discs, herniated discs, and even nerve damage.

Consistent Adjustments Help Prevent Golf Injuries

Golfing, or any activity, is more enjoyable when the body is in great condition and operating as it should. Research shows that regular chiropractic adjustments help keep the body functioning at its top performance level. These routine adjustments keep the spine properly aligned, and reduce the risk of injury. With the neck and back properly aligned, golf swings, and therefore golf games improve! Proper spinal alignment also makes awkward movements such as a golf swing less likely to cause injury.

Chiropractic Adjustments Can Reduce Pain

Any type of back injury can be painful. When you’re a golfer, your back is a huge part of your game. Rather than turning to over the counter or prescription medications that only mask the symptoms, many golfers have started turning to chiropractic to treat their injuries.

Chiropractic care identifies the source of a golfer’s pain. Many times, it is due to subluxations in the spine. Drs. Chris and Krystal Hohn can identify any subluxations in the spine. Next, with chiropractic adjustments, they will correct these subluxations.

This will restore proper function and movement to the spine. Most patients feel an immediate sense of pain relief after spinal adjustments! The best part? Chiropractic treats back pain at its source!

Chiropractic Can Help Golfers Recover Faster

Did you know that chiropractic is proven to help heal injuries to the back and neck faster? Through spinal adjustments, chiropractors restore the spine to its proper position. This allows the nervous system, and therefore the rest of the body, to function as it should!

When the nervous system is functioning as it should, the entire body functions and heals better. Doctors of chiropractic are trained to treat the whole body. Because of this, they can target specific vertebrae, joints, muscles, and tissues that need restoration and healing.

Chiropractic Care Can Increase Mobility

Whether you play golf every day, or only a handful of times a year, having good mobility is crucial to the game. Stiff joints and weak core muscles not only can lead to injury, but they can mess up your golf game.

Routine chiropractic adjustments keep your spine in alignment and your body functioning as it should. This helps prevent injury while increasing mobility — two key factors in a strong golf game.

It’s also important to remember that even though golf is not a contact sport, it’s important to properly warm up before a round. Stretch, stay hydrated, and stop the round should you experience any pain.

Pure Chiropractic Can Help With Your Golf Game

If you like to play golf, chiropractic is a valuable tool in your golf game arsenal. It can help you stay healthy, improve your swing, and promote healing from injuries.

Regular adjustments from Drs. Chris or Krystal Hohn at Pure Chiropractic will keep your spine aligned, your immune system functioning well, and your nervous system in great condition. All of these things not only lead to a better golf game, but to a healthier life!

Drs. Chris and Krystal Hohn at Pure Chiropractic seek to provide all of their patients with the highest quality chiropractic care. They treat the whole body, not just the spine. Together, Drs. Chris and Krystal are devoted to their family, patients, health, and strive to live a life full of integrity.

7 Tips for a Paleo 4th of July

It’s hard to believe that the 4th of July is almost here! If you friend and family group is like ours, most holiday celebrations center around FOOD. This can be a little tricky when you’re trying to eat a Paleo diet, but you can also view it as a great opportunity! Here are 10 tips for a festive, fun, and paleo Independence Day — with recipes!

7 Tips for a Paleo 4th of July in Howell, Michigan

1. Dish it up!

Whether you’re hosting the party or heading to a potluck, be sure to bring along a dish that everyone else can enjoy. This guarantees there will be at least one thing that is 100 percent paleo at the party. You can take it a step further and write out a label for your dish, including its ingredients and name of the dish. Be sure to include “paleo” in the name. This is a great conversation starter!

Prepare yourself for questions like, “What is paleo?” and “Why do you eat that way?” and “How did you make this so delicious?”

2. Sweeten up your hosts.

It is always polite to bring a gift to the host or hostess. Why not bring along a paleo friendly dessert for the hosts, along with a thank you card? This is a great way to show your appreciation and to give everyone a sweet and delicious paleo treat to try!

3. BYOM.

Bring your own meat. Fourth of July parties are usually all about grilling out and a barbecue. If you bring along your own meat, you can guarantee it and its marinade is 100 percent paleo. You also help off-set some of the costs for the hosts!

Feel weird bringing along your own meat? Try bringing along your own kebabs instead. Just make plenty of skewers to share with the whole group. Win, win!

4. Skip the buns.

If the cookout is serving up hamburgers and hotdogs, skip the bun and wrap the meat in lettuce or eat it by itself. This is an easy way to stay paleo compliant, while not missing out on the main event.

5. Prep with protein.

How many of you have every “face planted” into a bag of M&Ms because you got hangry? Parties are prime places to fall into old habits and temptations. Before you head to the big shindig, be sure to eat plenty of clean, lean protein. This will help you avoid faceplanting into that bag of potato chips or chocolate, because you won’t be starving upon arrival!

6. Choose your booze.

Not all alcohol is created equally, and only certain types of alcohol are considered paleo friendly. Shoot for clear spirits over darker spirits if you choose to drink this holiday, and avoid beer all together (it’s definitely not paleo). Most wines are just fine – just check the labels! Drink responsibly.

7. Stay hydrated.

With the summer heat, it’s important to stay hydrated. If you’re dehydrated, you move slower, have less energy, and your skin even suffers. If you focus on drinking water a little bit at a time throughout the day, you will feel fuller, and your body will ultimately feel better.Bring you own water bottle with you wherever you go, so you have water easily accessible!

12 Natural Remedies for Eczema

Eczema is a skin condition that affects over 30 million Americans. If your skin is red, dry, scaly, or extremely itchy in places, you may have eczema. Eczema usually appears in young children. Research shows that 65 percent of cases of eczema occur before children experience their first birthday! 90 percent of those affected have their first case of eczema before they turn 5 years old.

Although most outbreaks of eczema occur at a young age, they truly can happen at any age. Eczema can come and go throughout a person’s life, so having safe, natural, and effective solutions to this skin condition is amazing. Read on for eczema risk factors, causes, and symptoms, as well as 12 natural remedies for eczema!

Eczema Risk Factors, Causes, and Symptoms

Eczema impacts different people in different ways. Research has yet to find one single cause of eczema, but it has identified several common causes of flare ups.

Risk Factors for Eczema

  • Family history of eczema, hay fever, or asthma
  • Young age
  • Healthcare worker
  • Living in a dry climate
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Low vitamin D levels

Causes of Eczema

At this point in time, the medical community hasn’t pinned down one single cause of eczema. They have, however, identified several causes of what may lead to eczema outbreaks.

  • Dry skin
  • Sensitive skin that cracks open
  • Certain environmental conditions
  • Food allergies
  • Severe stress
  • Sudden temperature changes
  • Immune system dysfunction

Symptoms of Eczema

Eczema symptoms can be very mild, or extremely severe. They can even change from one flare up to another. Common symptoms of eczema include, but are not limited to:

  • Small, raised bumps appearing on the skin that may develop a crust and ooze liquid
  • Thick, dry, scaly patches of skin that cracks open
  • Red, brown, or grayish patches of skin on various parts and folds of the body
  • Skin that is sensitive and swollen from scratching
  • A recurring rash that is extremely itchy

Eczema Treatment: 12 Ways to Naturally Find Relief

Unfortunately, at this moment in time, there is no known cure for eczema. However, there are several remedies available that can alleviate its symptoms. Here are 12 ways you can naturally treat an eczema flare up:

1. Phototherapy/Light Therapy

The National Eczema Association states that phototherapy helps calm inflammation, reduces itching, increases vitamin D production, and fights bacteria on the skin. By getting just 10-15 minutes each day of sun exposure, you can naturally provide relief and healing for an eczema flare up.

2. Moisturizer

Dry skin is both a cause and a symptom of eczema. Using an all natural moisturizing such as coconut oil can help keep skin in tip top shape. Coconut oil also is antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antimicrobial. It can provide itch relief and speed healing.

3. Vitamin D

Research shows that a vitamin D deficiency may be one of the causes of eczema. One of the best ways to increase the body’s vitamin D levels is to get outside in the sunshine. You can also eat a diet rich in vitamin D foods such as fish, eggs, and dairy. If you aren’t catching enough sunlight and your diet is lacking in vitamin D rich foods, try taking a supplement. Make sure it is high quality!

4. Dead Sea Salt Baths

For thousands of years, the Dead Sea has been renowned for its healing powers. By taking a bath with salt from the Dead Sea, you can improve your skin’s hydration levels, reduce inflammation, relieve redness, and have smoother skin. Keep the bath water just warm enough to prevent a chill, and be sure to pat the skin dry when finished.

5. Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil is known for its ability to calm the mind as well as soothe the skin. That makes it the perfect oil for treating eczema. It has been proven to reduce the symptoms often associated with eczema, while also providing some much needed stress relief and sleep for those dealing with a flare up.

6. Cool, Wet Compress

Many people find relief from their eczema by applying a cool, wet compress to the impacted area. Some mothers swear by the old trick of applying damp socks to their children’s feet before bed, if their feet experience a flare up, in order to treat it! If the eczema patch is oozing, refrain from using this method, as the wet compress may increase the risk of infection.

7. Homemade Eczema Cream

Prescription or store bought eczema creams can be incredibly expensive. Try this recipe for a homemade eczema cream that you can keep on hand for any time eczema rears its ugly head.

  • 1/2 cup raw shea butter
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp local honey
  • 30 drops lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops melaleuca essential oil

  • Melt the shea butter and coconut oil until they are combined
  • Add the honey and stir
  • Add lavender and melaleuca essential oils
  • Let the ingredients cool only slightly, then place them in your mixer and mix until it has a frothy appearance and develops into a lotion-like consistency (typically 10+ minutes)
  • Store in an airtight container either at room temp or in the fridge

8. Omega-3s

Omega-3 fatty acids have incredible health benefits. A team of researchers from Norwegian University of Science and Technology found that when fish is introduced into the diet of babies by the age of 9 months, and eaten each week, the risk of developing eczema is greatly reduced. Loading up on foods full of omega-3s during an eczema flare up can also help treat it. The omega-3s will strengthen the immune system while speeding up recovery.

9. Probiotics

Studies show that probiotics can help not only treat eczema, but even prevent it in infants and young kids! Research shows that mothers who take probiotics during pregnancy and while breastfeeding may help prevent eczema for their kids. Should you experience an eczema outbreak, taking a quality probiotic will help keep the gut healthy, and therefore the rest of your immune system. This will help treat the eczema flare up from the inside out!

10. Licorice Extract

Licorice extract can help treat eczema when applied topically. Try mixing a few drops of this extract to some coconut oil and applying it directly to the impacted area. Studies show it reduces itching and helps soothe the area.

11. Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a powerful nutrient. Research shows that taking just 400IU of vitamin E each day can help reduce inflammation in the body. Applying vitamin E to the rash topically can also help relieve the itch, and protect against scarring.

12. Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant abilities. During an eczema outbreak, gently apply alcohol free witch hazel to the eczema directly. This will help promote healing. If the rash has started to ooze, witch hazel can also help dry it up, without over-drying the area.

A Summer Health Cheat Sheet

Summer is here! This time of year can be so busy and full of activities, trips, family time, and more. Through the hustle and bustle (and hopefully relaxation too!) it is a good idea to take some proactive steps on ways to stay healthy this season. Preventive care is the best way to fight disease and live a long, healthy, full life.

Whether you and your friends and family plan to visit the neighborhood pool, hit the hiking trails, load up the van for a road trip, or enjoy a nice staycation in Howell, Michigan, feeling your best will make each of these activities more enjoyable!

We’ve compiled a list of 8 simple steps for you and yours to take this summer in order to boost your health! Read on for 8 of our tips to help keep you healthy and active this season.

8 Simple Steps to Better Health This Summer

1. Get rid of the junk in your diet. For some this may be difficult to accept, but the junk in your diet has got to go. Use this season as a fresh start. Eliminate junk food, fast food, fried foods, and added sugars from your diet. Focus on getting your complex carbs from fruits and vegetables and less from grains. It’s worth it to put in a little more time and effort to freshen up your diet with fresh fruits and veggies this summer when they are in their peak season!

2. Drink more water. If you are still drinking soft drinks, stop. You already know they are bad for you. Cut back or eliminate the amount of juices and sports drinks you and your family drink as well. Water is the best way to stay hydrated and refreshed this season! It will keep you hydrated, will boost your health, will make your skin glow, and isn’t packed with sugars and calories.

3. Eat your fruits and vegetables. Doctors recommend eating a minimum of 5 to 7 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Summer is a great time to try and up your fruit and veggie intake and to get the entire family involved. Head to a local farmers market and let each family member pick out some of their favorite produce, as well as one new type of fruit or vegetable to try. You can even take it a step further and work on recipes together with your produce haul!

4. Do not skip breakfast. You know what they say, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Do not let your summer schedule get the best of you. Start each morning off right with a well-balanced breakfast. Choose from healthy foods such as steel-cut oats, eggs, vegetables, fruits, raw nut butters, and more. Try to hit a healthy balance between carbs, fats, and protein in order to fuel you for the day ahead.

5. Choose healthy fats and proteins. Make it a point this summer to be intentional about where you are sourcing your fats, proteins, and carbs. Try and choose healthier sources of fat and protein such as avocados, fish, and lean cuts of meat. This will boost your brain health and your energy levels!

6. Get your beauty rest. You need to get at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep each night. Make this a priority! Sleep helps your entire body and its systems reset. Adequate sleep plays an important role in your hormonal health, weight, mood, and more.

7. Exercise! Aim to exercise at least 30 minutes each day, 3 to 5 times per week. Even simply taking a walk can do wonders for your overall health. Head outside, hit the running or walking trails, go to a CrossFit box, dance away the day with Zumba, you name it – it’s time to get active this season. Make sure you use proper stretching before and after your exercise to keep your muscles limber and avoid injuries.

8. Get routine chiropractic care. Chiropractic care is about far more than pain management. It has been proven time and time again to boost immunity, promote better sleep, reduce recovery time, increase energy, treat aches and pains, and more! Incorporate routine chiropractic care into your summer wellness routine in order to feel your best this season!

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Chiropractic care seeks to help the body learn to heal itself. Subluxations can be present in the spine long before symptoms present themselves. When subluxations occur in the spine, the body cannot function as it should. Nerve communication is interrupted, bodily functions don’t operate at their peak performance, and eventually symptoms appear.

Poor sleep, exhaustion, anxiety, depression, back or neck pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, ear infections, seasonal allergies, headaches, and everything in between are indications that subluxations in the spine exist. All of these ailments make it difficult to fully enjoy each day.

Drs. Chris and Krystal Hohn at Pure Chiropractic in Howell, Michigan long to help each patient live their best life. They firmly believe chiropractic plays an integral part in this! Through targeted spinal adjustments, they can correct subluxations in the spine and help patients feel their best. Proven benefits of chiropractic adjustments include, but are not limited to:

  • Increased range of motion
  • Better sleep
  • Improved mood
  • Fewer headaches
  • Faster recovery time
  • Reduced pain
  • Increased energy
  • Better athletic performance
  • Easier labor and delivery during pregnancy

  • Back pain is one of the most common reasons for missed work, and the second most common reason for doctors visits

Signs and Symptoms of Lower Back Pain

Back pain is not a one size fits all condition. It impacts each person in a unique way. This makes sense because back pain is caused by many different factors! Signs and symptoms of lower back pain include, but are not limited to:

  • Muscle weakness in the lower back and thighs
  • Numbness in the lower back and thighs
  • Tenderness or shooting pain from the lower back to the thigh
  • Discomfort near the tailbone when sitting for extended periods of time

  • Pain when exercising, walking, standing, moving, or performing basic tasks

Causes and Risk Factors for Lower Back Pain

Most cases of lower back pain can be sourced back to issues within the musculoskeletal system. Subluxations, weakness, and abnormalities within the spine, bones, joints, ligaments, and muscles can all cause lower back pain. Some of the most common causes of lower back pain are:

10 Exercises for Lower Back Pain Relief

At Pure Chiropractic, Drs. Chris and Krystal Hohn firmly believe in the power of chiropractic to treat back pain. By identifying the source of your pain, and performing spinal manipulations and adjustments, Drs. Hohn can help provide lower back pain relief!

Between chiropractic adjustments, Dr. Chris and Dr. Krystal may recommend several exercises to help rebuild strength in the lower back muscles. Try out these exercises and let us know how they help!

1. Butterfly Pose. Tight thigh muscles can cause lower back pain. In order to relieve tension in these muscles, try out the butterfly pose! This will help you relax, stretch your glutes and thighs, and alleviate lower back pain.

2. Abdominal Crunches. A weak core can cause lower back pain. This is why strengthening your ab muscles is always a good idea. Strong abs make it easier to support your back. Click here for information regarding proper form and crunches.

3. Single Leg Lifts. Leg lifts are another great way to strengthen the lower ab muscles. Stronger abs mean your core can properly support itself. This helps get rid of lower back pain. Here are step by step directions for single leg lifts.

4. Wall Sits. Wall sits are a great way to target abs, thighs, and glutes all at the same time. They are also great because you can literally do them anywhere with a wall! Stand with your back about one foot away from the wall. Next, lean back until your back rests flat against the wall. Slide down until your knees create a 90 degree angle. Hold for 10 seconds and then slowly slide back up the wall. Repeat 10 times.

5. Oblique Crunches. Oblique crunches will strengthen the obliques in your core. Yet again, a stronger core will help reduce pain in the lower back. Here is great information on the proper way to perform oblique crunches.

6. Swimming. It’s summertime, which means the pools are open and ready for business. Luckily for those suffering from low back pain, swimming is a great way to help! It exercises your muscles, lungs, and heart. This zero impact activity is a great way to strengthen your body and back.

7. Lengthen Your Hamstrings. Tight hamstrings can cause lower back pain. Hamstrings often become tight from overuse, or sitting for extended periods of time. When they become tight, they create tension in the lower back. By simply stretching your hamstrings every day, you can reduce lower back pain. Give these stretches a try.

8. Bird Dog. Performing this exercise will help strengthen your core and glutes — two key players in relieving lower back pain!

9. Pilates Bridge. The Pilates bridge helps strengthen your glutes, hamstrings, and back muscles. Strengthening these areas will reduce lower back pain.

10. Stretch Your Glutes. The gluteus maximus is the largest muscle in your buttocks. The top edge of your gluteus maximus attaches to the membrane that protects your lower back muscles, the lumbodorsal fascia. If your glutes are tight, they can lead to lower back pain. Try these stretches to loosen up!
