Say Goodbye To Ear Infections Now!

baby-165067__340-1

Ear infections are a very common problem in children. Many children have prolonged problems with their ears. Often these infections do not seem to go away with antibiotics or similar treatments. However did you know that a Chiropractor could help with your child’s ears?

Problems with ear infections affect children all across the globe. Up to 10% of children are affected in the developed world. In the developing world as many as 45% are affected. And it is widely believed that many of these children are suffering needlessly.

The problems can start in infancy, peaking at around the age of two and lasting up until the age of 6. Where treatment is not affective, a child may well continue to suffer from problems beyond the age of 6 and into early adulthood. Symptoms include soreness, pain, fluid, loss of appetite, changes in behavior and trouble sleeping.

Signs your child has a middle ear infection.

There are tell tale signs which could indicate whether your child is suffering from ear problems.

1. Balance problems and dizziness

2. Hearing problems

3. When there is increased pressure in the ear, a young child can often be seen rubbing their ears in an attempt to alleviate this.

4. Popping or ringing in the ear. Your child will need to be older to explain this symptom.

We might presume that ear infections are simply part of a child growing up. However yet when left untreated this can cause complications. Children may experience temporary or permanent hearing loss, delayed speech and in the most serious cases, death.

The conventional treatments for ear infections include antibiotics, ear drops, ear wicking and surgery. Sometimes it is necessary to have ear tube surgery. This basically involves the insertion of a tiny tube into the ear. The tube equalizes the pressure in the ear and prevents future problems.

Although ear tubes can prevent any long term damage from recurrent ear infections, there are still risks to consider. Additionally, some reports suggest that some children have been fitted with tubes unnecessarily.

As with any surgery, anesthesia is always a risk. Also the insertion of tubes can cause scarring on the eardrum. However, repeated ear infections can also have this effect. Many parents report a positive change in their child after surgery.

In some countries, children receive an immunization called Prevnar. The vaccine prevents infections from the bacteria pneumococcus. Pneumococcus is known to cause blood infections, meningitis and ear infections. Studies into the vaccine show that children who receive it, report up to a 20% decrease in the number of ear infections experienced.

Antibiotics

Whilst antibiotics are a common solution, regular use can cause resistance to the drug. Some patients also report other unwanted side effects such as diarrhea. However, many health professionals continue to prescribe them and antibiotics can start a vicious cycle.  Antibiotics are well known to lessen the body’s natural immune response. Furthermore, the western world is facing super bugs which cannot be treated with antibiotics due to over use.

If your child is suffering with an uncomplicated ear infection, then 80% of these cases will go away on their own. In the meantime you can comfort your child in the following ways.

  1. Raise the head of the bed. For smaller children place a blanket or pillow under the mattress.
  2. Keep your child hydrated. Add herbs into the diet which help to break up the mucus.
  3. Keep solid foods to a minimum and dose with vitamin C.
  4. Gently pull your child’s ear lobe away from the head and massage.

Are there any other steps which could prevent my child getting an ear infection?

Is your child suffering a large number of ear infections? Would you like to prevent your child from getting ear infections in the first place?

  1. Breastfeeding is good all round for the immune system. Research has shown a direct link between breast feeding and a reduced amount of ear infections.
  2. When children are surrounded buy a constant stream of different children, germ sharing can be rife. Where possible, switch your child to a home daycare setting which will reduce the risk.
  3. Are allergies a contributing factor to your child’s infections? If you think this could be the case, research how you can reduce triggers of the allergies.
  4. Never feed baby in a lying position. This can cause milk to run into the Eustachian tube which can contribute to ear infections.
  5. As soon as your child shows symptoms of a cold, make sure you reduce irritation by keeping the nose as clear from mucus as possible.
  6. Most responsible adults would not smoke near a young child as a standard measure. Children’s nasal passages can be irritated by smoke, so don’t exacerbate the problem.
  7. Boost your child’s immune system with Echinacea.
  8. Eating more raw fruit and vegetables is never a bad thing and it can help prevent infections.

Chiropractic For Chronic Ear Infections

In recent times, more and more parents are looking to chiropractors for help in alleviating childhood ailments. So what is difference between conventional methods and a chiropractor? Whilst a doctor may treat the symptoms, a chiropractor looks at the underlying cause. The purpose of the Chiropractor is to adjust the spine. This restores the natural functioning of the body and to enable the body to heal itself without the use of drugs.

Did you know that many Chiropractors believe there is a link between the birthing process and ear infections? During birth the neck can become misaligned. This disrupts normal nerve function and leads to a build up of fluid in the middle ear.

Recent research has shown a strong correlation between chiropractic adjustments and the resolution of ear infections. In a study of 322 children who were experiencing chronic ear infections, 80% experienced no further infections after undergoing a series of chiropractic adjustments. This is only a small scale study and chiropractors are calling for extensive clinical trials.

Are there any side effects?

More research needs to be done in this area but chiropractic treatment is a drug less approach which parents should seriously consider if their child experiences chronic ear problems. People can be concerned about the risk of spinal readjustment and what could happen if something goes wrong. However it should be noted that the risk of any serious complication is just 6.39 per 10 million adjustments for the neck and 1 per 100 million for lower back adjustments.

10 Researched Benefits of Chiropractic

Chiropractic is an incredible, drug-free alternative to traditional health care. Millions of people around the world have experienced the amazing benefits of chiropractic and have reported incredible benefits. Most of the benefits of seeing a doctor of chiropractic come from chiropractic adjustments.

Vertebrae Anatomy with Ciculatory System

A chiropractic adjustment aims to remove a vertebral subluxation from the spine. Vertebral subluxations can be caused by:

  • Misalignments in the vertebra due to a slip or fall
  • An inflammatory response caused by poor diet, stress, or dehydration
  • Poor posture
  • Joint swelling
  • Trigger points or tight muscles pulling the vertebrae out of place

Chiropractic is about far more than treating back pain — a great chiropractor treats the whole patient. Here are some of the amazing results from years of medical research, and the studies that show the proven benefits of chiropractic:

1. Sciatica

The European Spine Journal published findings from a clinical trial last year that stated that chiropractic adjustments resulted in a 72 percent success rate in treating sciatica and other related symptoms, compared to the 20 percent success rate from physical therapy, and 50 percent success rate from corticosteroid injections.

Chiropractic care offers a natural, safe, and effective way to treat sciatica pain!

2. Low Back Pain and Neck Pain

The British Medical Journal released a study in 2003 that focused on 183 patients with neck pain. These patients were randomly assigned to manual therapy (spinal mobilization), physiotherapy (primarily exercise), or general practitioner care (counseling, education, and drugs) in a year long study.

The clinical results showed that chiropractic adjustments resulted in faster recovery than both physiotherapy and general practitioner care. Also, the total costs of the patients treated with chiropractic was 1/3 the costs of physiotherapy or general practitioner care!

In a study funded by NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine to test the effectiveness of different approaches for treating neck pain, 272 study participants were split into three groups. One group received spinal manipulative therapy from a doctor of chiropractic, one group received pain medication (over-the-counter, narcotics, and muscle relaxants), and one group was given exercise recommendations.

After 12 weeks, nearly 57 percent of study participants who met with chiropractors, and 48 percent who exercised, reported at least a 75 percent reduction in pain. Only 33 percent of people in the medication group reported at least a 75 percent reduction in pain.

After one year, nearly 53 percent of participants in the drug-free groups still reported at least a 75 percent pain reduction, while only 38 percent of those who took medication reported the same.

3. Athletic Performance

Did you know that every single NFL team has a chiropractor on staff? And that incredible athletes such as Michael Phelps and Jordan Spieth are under regular chiropractic care?

Chiropractic is incredibly effective at pain-based and pathological conditions. Studies have proven that regular chiropractic care can:

  • Reduce inflammation
  • Boost the immune system
  • Enhance pulmonary function
  • Decrease mental and oxidative stress
  • Relieve muscle tension
  • Increase energy levels

Wouldn’t your athletic performance improve with those results?

4. Scoliosis

Chiropractic adjustments, coupled with muscular rehabilitation, may help prevent the progression of scoliosis. Chiropractic adjustments and therapies help to improve form and function, and induce mobility to the joints. These improvements can decrease pain, increase comfort and improve posture.

An expert in the musculoskeletal system, your Dr. Hohn offers invaluable insight and treatment options for his patients. Chiropractic care can help stop or diminish further degeneration of the spine, while helping improve overall function of the body.

5. Headaches

Headaches are the second most common condition chiropractors regularly manage (back pain is the first). There are over 230 peer-reviewed research articles out there that reference chiropractic’s ability to help cure, prevent, and ease headaches and migraines!

One trial found that 22 percent of patients who received chiropractic treatment saw the number of headaches drop by 90 percent. NINETY PERCENT! In that same study, 49 percent of patients said they had an incredible reduction in headache pain intensity.

6. Colic and Ear Infections

The Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics found that chiropractic adjustments greatly reduced colic symptoms. It’s truly incredible how the nervous system controls every single cell in the body, and if a child’s spine is out of alignment, their body cannot function the way it was intended!

Also, scores of case studies have been conducted that describe how children suffering from ear infections, acid reflux, and colic experience incredible relief from chiropractic adjustments. With ear infections being the number one reason children visit the pediatrician, it’s time to give chiropractic the chance to heal the body naturally, and without the side effects of antibiotics.

7. Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder is stiffness, pain, and limited range of movement in the shoulder. It can happen as the result of an injury, from overuse, from a stroke, or even from diabetes. The tissues around the shoulder joint stiffen, scar tissue forms, and shoulder movement becomes incredibly difficult and painful.

A clinical trial was published last year that showed how patients suffering from frozen shoulder responded to chiropractic care. 50 patients were studied. 16 patients saw their frozen shoulder completely resolved. 25 patients showed a 75-90 percent improvement. 8 showed a 50 percent to 75 percent improvement. Only 1 patient showed 0 to 50 percent improvement.

8. Surgery Prevention

Chiropractic has long been hailed by natural healthcare professionals as a natural method to prevent back surgery. According to the American Chiropractic Association, workers with back injuries whose first point of contact was a surgeon or MD had a 42.7 percent likelihood of having surgery, while those who saw a chiropractic as a first point of contact only had a 1.5 percent chance of surgery!

9. Blood Pressure

In 2007, George Bakris, an expert in the field of hypertension, published a study with a team of researchers from the Human Journal of Hypertension. This study found that just one upper cervical chiropractic adjustment had the same effect as two blood pressure-lowering drugs! AND the effects of just one adjustment lasted more than 6 months!

Patients who received chiropractic adjustments compared to those who received placebo treatments saw an average 14mm Hg greater drop in systolic blood pressure (top number in blood pressure count) and an average 8 mm Hg greater drop in diastolic blood pressure (bottom number in blood pressure count).

10. Neurological Conditions

Current and ongoing research via upright MRIs shows how upper cervical adjustments affect various brain-based conditions. So far, MRI scans have revealed that cerebral spinal fluid and blood flow are markedly increased after a chiropractic adjustment, and that cerebellar invagination (where the cerebellum drops down below the skull line) is being reversed, while brain plaquing, common among multiple sclerosis patients, is disappearing altogether.

Chiropractic and Athletic Recovery

It’s no surprise that participating in sports puts difficult demands on the body. Whether you’re pounding the pavement on a run, dancing away calories in Zumba, lifting heavy weights in the gym, or elongating muscles in yoga, you need your body to be prepared for the impact athletics can have — this means doing all you can to avoid an injury.

Osteopathy treatment, the professional masseur and his patient

Luckily, it is possible to reduce your chances of suffering an injury to your muscles and ligaments through chiropractic care. Chiropractic adjustments can help your neck muscles, ligaments, and tendons to heal faster through spinal manipulation and stretching/strengthening exercises. By getting regular chiropractic adjustments, you ensure your spine is properly aligned, your nervous system is working at its fullest potential, and you’re ready to take on the athletic endeavors of your choosing.

Should you suffer an athletic injury, chiropractic care is a powerful tool that can decrease recovery time and have you back in the game faster. Your chiropractor has years of training and experience in understanding how the human body works — if you injure your hip, chances are you’re overcompensating in other areas of your body to make up for it. Your chiropractor can help identify the areas where you are overcompensating, help restore balance, and aid in muscle and ligament recovery along the way.

Whether you’re a professional athlete or a weekend warrior, chiropractic care can aid in your fitness journey. It can help prevent injuries, treat injuries, and help you live your best life! Call us today for your consultation and appointment!

Reasons to Strengthen Your Core

Many of us strive for a strong core because we want that “perfect beach body,” but with summer soon ending, we are here to offer you some long-term, lasting motivation on reasons why you need to strengthen your core.

Screen Shot 2016-08-31 at 11.25.55 PM

Your core is about more than just your ab muscles. It’s your body’s powerhouse! It facilitates movement and houses your inner organs and central nervous system — safe to say your core is a big deal. Here are a few reasons why you should keep your core strong:

  • Help Prevent Injuries
    • Building a strong core requires more than just doing crunches. You need to build both core stability (those deep internal muscles close to the spine) and core strength (those six-pack abs). A rock-solid core will help ensure that your movements are strong and will keep injuries at bay!
  • Protect Your Inner Organs and Central Nervous System
    • Your core houses a majority of your internal organs, your protects your spine and central nervous system, and is also where your body’s largest (and most important) veins and arteries abide. Having a strong core will help ensure everything stays protected as you move throughout your day.
  • Banish Back Pain
    • Back pain is quickly becoming an epidemic across the United States, and weak core muscles can often be the culprit. When ab muscles are weak, it’s often because back muscles are overly strong, creating an unbalance in the body. Through chiropractic adjustments and strengthening your core, back pain can be a thing of the past!
  • Get a Strong, Confident Posture
    • A strong core helps you have an upright posture, not only protecting your spine but also exuding confidence and strength to those around you. Practice good posture every chance you get — in the car, at the office, etc. Posture matters.

#1 Chiropractic Alleviates Pain

Chiropractic treats pain at its source rather than masking symptoms with medication. Often, conditions such as headaches, sports injuries, pain disorders, and more are caused by subluxations in the spine! A chiropractor can correct these subluxations and restore order to your nervous system.

#2 Chiropractic Prevents Other Conditions

An increasing number of research studies show that chiropractic adjustments not only treat already occurring issues, but that they can also keep other detrimental conditions at bay. Conditions such as colic, chronic ear infections, high blood pressure, behavioral issues, and Parkinson’s disease have all seen improvement through chiropractic adjustments.

#3 Chiropractic Boosts Productivity

Regular chiropractic care boosts work productivity and performance by warding off work-related injuries such as text-neck, carpal tunnel syndrome, and low-back pain.

#4 Chiropractic May Make You Smarter

In a study of 500 adults, researchers used technology to create maps of functioning in the exterior portions of the brain before and after chiropractic adjustments of the cervical spine. They found that the adjustments activated certain neurological pathways in the brain, potentially stimulating cognitive function!

#5 Chiropractic Boosts Immunity

Research shows that regularly scheduled chiropractic care can boost the body’s immune response to outside threats!

#6 Chiropractic Reduces Stress

Chiropractic helps combat stress by helping the body achieve balance. Regular adjustments keep pain and injuries at bay and also keep the nervous system functioning as it should — increasing its ability to handle stress with ease.

#7 Chiropractic Increases Physical Activity

Many patients report increased motivation and ability to stick to a regular exercise program once they begin chiropractic treatment. As their spine is freed from subluxations, the nervous system can function as it should, increasing energy and motivation!

#8 Chiropractic Allows Patients to Avoid Unnecessary Medication

Individuals who maintain regular chiropractic care are far less likely to overuse or misuse medication. Whether it’s prescription or over-the-counter medication, each comes with a long list of potentially harmful side effects that chiropractic care can help you avoid all together.

#9 Chiropractic Improves Sleep Quality

Chiropractic adjustments are often associated with better sleep. Why? Because adjustments often reduce pain and anxiety — the two biggest hinderances to a great night’s sleep!

#10 Chiropractic Improves Overall Wellness

Regular chiropractic care empowers patients with “health esteem” — teaching them to take charge of their own well-being and encouraging them towards a life of optimal health and longevity.

Top 7 Tips For Buying A New Mattress

Buying the perfect mattress can be tricky, so we’ve put together a list of 7 tips to ease the process for you! A great mattress is essential in maintaining spinal health, so check out the tips below and let us know what you think!

1. Talk to your doctor. Ask your chiropractor about what he or she recommends! Your chiropractor knows your spine and what type of support your back needs.

2. Firm mattresses aren’t always better for your back. Research actually shows that the best mattress for lower back pain is a medium firm mattress, rather than an incredibly firm one.

3. Pillow top preference may depend on your size. Very light-weight people don’t need a thick pillow top mattress because they don’t weigh enough to compress the foam down to touch the support system. Larger people are typically more comfortable on a pillow top mattress because it places some extra cushion between them and the coils.

4. Adjustable beds are a great option. Adjustable beds allow you to elevate your head and knees in order to relieve pressure on your lower back. If an adjustable bed isn’t in the budget, you can get the same effect using pillows.

5. Check the warranty. A good mattress should have no less than a 10 year full replacement warranty.

6. Protect your investment. Always purchase a waterproof mattress protector, as stains will void your warranty.

7. Test the mattress! Try to lie on the mattress for at least 10-15 minutes in the store so that you get a great feel for it. Don’t feel rushed by the salesperson- this is a big investment!
