Does Spinal Manipulation Work?

Spinal manipulation, also called spinal manipulative therapy or manual therapy, combines moving and jolting joints, massage, exercise, and physical therapy. It’s designed to relieve pressure on joints, reduce inflammation, and improve nerve function. It’s often used to treat back, neck, shoulder, and headache pain.

This form of therapy uses a force applied on the spinal joints. This force is controlled and quick. The pressure of the force will depend on the chiropractic technique used. Force is applied on the spinal joint to bring it back to its alignment. There will be a “pop” sound hear if the spinal manipulation was a success. This pop is due to the dissolved gas when joint fluids are released. Although a pop sound can be heard often, this is not a requirement to ensure the effectiveness of spinal adjustment.

Chiropractors use it to treat other disorders too, such as menstrual pain and sinus problems. Today, spinal manipulation is used in both Western and traditional Asian medicine. In North America, it’s usually performed by chiropractors, osteopathic physicians, and physical and occupational therapists.

This is a technique practiced by different health care professionals including osteopathic physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors and naturopathic physicians. During spinal manipulation, practitioners use their bare hands or sometimes a special device and apply a controlled force to a particular joint of the spine. The amount of force that is applied is based on the kind of manipulation that is used. The objective of this treatment is pain relief and improved physical functioning.

Who Needs Spinal Manipulation?

Lower back pain is a very common condition among many people and generally improves with self care. You can remain active while taking pain relieving medication or applying heat to manage the condition. However, there are times when the situation goes out of control, the condition becomes chronic and lasts for several months or years. Your physical condition deteriorates and movement becomes painful. It results in loss of productivity and wages and as well. If left untreated, this condition can prove to be debilitating and can be a challenge to identify, study and treat.

In situations such as this, health care professionals who have been trained to use this technique can help in improving functioning and movement. Exercise, massage, physical therapy and spinal manipulation are the options that can be used to provide relief from back pain.

How Does It Help?

A condition known as cauda equine syndrome, which is a narrowing of a segment of the spinal cord causes the nerves to become pinched. This can lead to weakness, pain and a loss of feeling in either or both of your limbs. The high velocity low amplitude (HVLA) thrust and massage techniques that are used in spinal manipulation helps release the pressure on the nerves.

This is a safe treatment when performed by a licensed and trained practitioner. Slight discomfort in the affected area is one of the most common side effects but the discomfort is minimal and tends to recede within an hour to two days. It is very rare for any serious complications to arise.

Long-Term Benefits

The objective of the manipulation is to achieve joint cavitation. While pressure is being applied to the back, there is generally a cracking or a popping sound and. This audible release is what distinguishes this technique from other massages. Regular sessions with the therapist help in reducing back pain and provide continuous and permanent relief. Both, pain and dysfunction can be dealt with in an effective manner.

Chiropractors are the best professionals to perform spinal manipulative therapy. Physical therapists and osteopathic physicians can also perform such technique. Nonetheless, seeking a chiropractor’s services will get you what you need. The ultimate goal of the chiropractor is to reduce the pain you are feeling and at the same time, restore function and mobility from the mechanical disorders your body suffers from. Chiropractors are highly trained and specializing in manual therapy. They can evaluate your body’s condition just by touching key areas alone.

When do you need spinal manipulation? There is a long list of conditions wherein spinal can be treated. Aligning the spine is a way of treating all the other diseases that affect the central nervous system and musculoskeletal system. This includes unlocking spinal joints, rehabilitating ligament injuries, stimulating the nervous system, treating headaches, relief from pain caused by repetitive stress injuries, muscle spasms, pinched nerves and many more.

Spinal manipulative therapy is vital to chiropractic care as this is the most common and effective chiropractic technique used by all chiropractors today. It is safe and very effective in treating various health conditions in the body. Doctors of chiropractors are trained and experts in doing spinal manipulations so you can trust that you are in good hands. Manual therapy is all-natural and your body will be able to heal on its own. Nevertheless, a chiropractor will be the one to determine if you are a good candidate for chiropractic treatment or not.

Before you start on any spinal manipulation therapy, inform your health provider about any complementary health practices that you have been using. They should be able to get a complete picture about how you manage your health. This will ensure that the care you receive is coordinated and safe.

Provides Effective Pain Relief

Several studies that have been done have established that chiropractic care can be more effective than medications when it comes to relieving lower or upper back pain or neck pain. It also works to treat the pain of sciatica, bulging disc and slipped disc.

Pain Management without Drugs

As research throws up more and more evidence of the dangers of taking medication and prescription pills, we are becoming more conscientious about reducing our dependence of medication. Chiropractic provides the perfect alternative as it promotes a drug-free approach. Chiropractic focuses on treating the whole system holistically.

Low Risk Treatment

Conventional medicine uses prescription medication for mild back pain and surgery for more severe back pain. Both of these are high risk as medications can cause complicated adverse effects and surgery is invasive. With chiropractic adjustments the only side effect you can expect is a bit of soreness and in some cases fatigues. Very rarely are there any serious side effects.

Treats the Cause of the Pain

Most medications merely help to manage the symptoms of pain but the cause of the pain still remains in the body. Painkillers may mask the pain in your upper or lower back but it does not cure the bulging disc. Chiropractic care on the other hand addresses the cause of the pain, which is more effective for long-term relief.

Treatments Can Be Customized Depending On Your Condition

Dr. Hohn, at Pure Chiropractic, located in Howell, MI makes use of a wide range of tools and techniques to treat pain and other mobility issues. All of these techniques can be customized for your body shape and size and the location of your pain. If you let your chiropractor know the exact spot that is painful and the kind of pain, you will receive customized chiropractic treatment.

Prevents Joint Dysfunction & Several Other Conditions

One of the greatest benefits of chiropractic care is that it reduces joint dysfunction, which could otherwise lead to symptoms in other parts of the body. Routine treatment can also prevent and treat several other health conditions, from headaches and migraines to menstrual disorders, fertility issues, gastrointestinal disorders and ear infection. Your chiropractor can help develop a customized treatment plan for you depending on your symptoms.

Improved body Function:

Chiropractic care from Pure Chiropractic can help with such body processes as increased circulation, improved delivery of oxygen and nutrients, improved flexibility, reduced muscle spasms, and assists the body with relaxing, repairing, and speeding up the healing process. The result is better physical performance, improved nervous system function, improved immune system function, boosted energy, and an overall healthier person. Chiropractic also put an importance on nutrition and fitness programs, and wellness and lifestyle modifications for sustaining physical and mental health.

Back Pain and Neck Pain

Research has revealed that chiropractic care can benefit patients with back pain as much as such treatments as physical therapy and physician care. Chiropractics will help relieve back pain which allows the stimulation of healing. Chiropractors often work with medical professionals to ensure the patient is getting the required care. If you have a serious back injury, consulting with a physician is recommended before undergoing chiropractic care.

Chiropractics can help relieve neck pain from an injury. Chiropractors can perform neck alignments and there have been a very low rate of issues arising from the treatment. However, because there are a number of health risks when engaging in a neck alignment, it is important to consult with a Physician or Specialist before engaging in chiropractic treatment. Some experts say that the neck area should be avoided in chiropractics, especially if the injury is quite serious as after a car accident. There is a risk of a stroke, especially for those on blood thinners.

Like any other therapeutic treatment, when considering taking advantage of chiropractics, consult with your physician, a medical physician specializing in the spine, and even a chiropractic association. Make sure you ask the chiropractor many questions. He or she will explain the treatment process and will explain the benefits, and if there are any risks. When undergoing chiropractic treatment, always report any positive or negative reactions that you have during and after an adjustment. Always listen to a Chiropractor’s recommendations and advice so that your recovery process will be successful.

9 Researched Benefits of Chiropractic

Chiropractic is an alternative medical treatment that influences the body’s natural ability to heal itself without using drugs or surgery. Chiropractors such as Dr. Hohn at Pure Chiropractic, located in Howell, MI, treat musculoskeletal and nervous system disorders, common aches and pains, and everything in between for people of all ages.

The spine is the main regulator of movement. Muscles and ligaments attached to the back of the spine influences the movement of the spine. Chiropractic care has helped patients of all ages and in all walks of life. Patients have found pain relief from conditions that can include spine associated pain such as cervical back pain, bad posture, constipation, and whiplash. A chiropractor works the spine, provides stretching exercises, and massages areas to alleviate pain providing patients with more comfort so they can perform daily functions. Below are some of the benefits of chiropractic care.

9 Researched Benefits of Chiropractic

Back Pain: Research has revealed that chiropractic care can benefit patients with back pain as much as such treatments as physical therapy and physician care. Dr. Hohn will help relieve back pain which allows the stimulation of healing. Chiropractors often work with medical professionals to ensure the patient is getting the required care. If you have a serious back injury, consulting with a physician is recommended before undergoing chiropractic care.

Neck Pain: Chiropractic can help relieve neck pain from an injury. Improved body Function: Chiropractic care can help with such body processes as increased circulation, improved delivery of oxygen and nutrients, improved flexibility, reduced muscle spasms, and assists the body with relaxing, repairing, and speeding up the healing process. The result is better physical performance, improved nervous system function, improved immune system function, boosted energy, and an overall healthier person. Chiropractics also put an importance on nutrition and fitness programs, and wellness and lifestyle modifications for sustaining physical and mental health.

Sсоlіоѕіѕ: Chіrорrасtіс adjustments, соuрlеd with muѕсulаr rеhаbіlіtаtіоn, mау hеlр prevent thе рrоgrеѕѕіоn оf ѕсоlіоѕіѕ. Chіrорrасtіс adjustments and thеrаріеѕ hеlр tо іmрrоvе fоrm аnd funсtіоn, аnd induce mоbіlіtу tо thе jоіntѕ. These іmрrоvеmеntѕ саn dесrеаѕе раіn, іnсrеаѕе соmfоrt and іmрrоvе posture.

Pain relief: Chiropractic care is one of the most effective and safest forms of health care to treat pain due to spinal related conditions. Chiropractic is so effective because most causes of spinal disorders are related to abnormalities of the spine and the surrounding soft tissue structures. Doctors of chiropractic are specifically trained to identify and treat subluxations (misalignments of the vertebrae) and their subsequent effect on the central nervous system. Anti-inflammatory medication and pain relievers merely mask the symptoms and have many undesirable side effects.

Increased Range of Motion of the Spine and Extremities: Chiropractic care has been shown repeatedly to increase not only the range of motion of the spine but also in the extremities. Increasing a person’s range of motion can positively and drastically affect lives in many ways. For some, an increased range of motion means being able to bend down to pick up their grandchildren. For others, it means they can garden without pain or get an extra 40 yards of distance out of their driver on the golf course. In many cases, an increase in range of motion immediately follows chiropractic adjustments. This is one of the reasons why many top professional sporting teams have team chiropractors.

Increased Balance and Coordination: Many problems in balance and coordination in the aging population have been shown to come from injury or degenerative changes to the cervical spine (neck region). Structures known as mechanoreceptors are located in the posterior (back) joints of the cervical spine and are responsible for providing the brain with essential information important for balance and coordination. Mechanoreceptors in cervical posterior joints provide major input regarding the position of the head in relation to the body. With aging, mild defects impair mechanoreceptors function and results in a loss of proprioception (sense of body awareness). With decreased proprioception, body positioning in space is impaired and the patient becomes reliant on vision to know the location of a limb. To compensate for the loss of proprioception (sense of body awareness) in the legs, the feet are kept wider apart than usual. Steps become irregular and uneven in length. As impairment increases, the patient becomes unable to compensate. With severe loss of proprioception, the patient is unable to get up from a chair or rise after a fall without assistance.

Decreased Joint Degeneration: A subluxated (misaligned) spine is much like a misaligned wheel on an automobile. This misalignment will cause the spine (and the wheel) to wear out prematurely. Since all moving parts will eventually wear down over time, it is very important to get your spine aligned periodically. Chiropractic care decreases spinal degeneration and other arthritic changes by normalizing the spinal alignment and reducing spinal stress.

Frozen Shоuldеr: Frоzеn shoulder іѕ ѕtіffnеѕѕ, раіn, аnd lіmіtеd rаngе оf mоvеmеnt іn thе ѕhоuldеr. It саn hарреn аѕ thе result оf аn іnjurу, from оvеruѕе, from a ѕtrоkе, оr еvеn from dіаbеtеѕ. Thе tissues around thе ѕhоuldеr joint stiffen, ѕсаr tіѕѕuе forms, and ѕhоuldеr movement becomes іnсrеdіblу dіffісult аnd раіnful.

Overall, the experience is not scary at all, in fact many chiropractors play relaxing music or relaxing videos to help you feel at ease.

10 Exercises for Lower Back Pain Relief

At Pure Chiropractic, Drs. Chris and Krystal Hohn firmly believe in the power of chiropractic to treat back pain. By identifying the source of your pain, and performing spinal manipulations and adjustments, Drs. Hohn can help provide lower back pain relief!

Between chiropractic adjustments, Dr. Chris and Dr. Krystal may recommend several exercises to help rebuild strength in the lower back muscles. Try out these exercises and let us know how they help!

1. Butterfly Pose. Tight thigh muscles can cause lower back pain. In order to relieve tension in these muscles, try out the butterfly pose! This will help you relax, stretch your glutes and thighs, and alleviate lower back pain.

2. Abdominal Crunches. A weak core can cause lower back pain. This is why strengthening your ab muscles is always a good idea. Strong abs make it easier to support your back. Click here for information regarding proper form and crunches.

3. Single Leg Lifts. Leg lifts are another great way to strengthen the lower ab muscles. Stronger abs mean your core can properly support itself. This helps get rid of lower back pain. Here are step by step directions for single leg lifts.

4. Wall Sits. Wall sits are a great way to target abs, thighs, and glutes all at the same time. They are also great because you can literally do them anywhere with a wall! Stand with your back about one foot away from the wall. Next, lean back until your back rests flat against the wall. Slide down until your knees create a 90 degree angle. Hold for 10 seconds and then slowly slide back up the wall. Repeat 10 times.

5. Oblique Crunches. Oblique crunches will strengthen the obliques in your core. Yet again, a stronger core will help reduce pain in the lower back. Here is great information on the proper way to perform oblique crunches.

6. Swimming. It’s summertime, which means the pools are open and ready for business. Luckily for those suffering from low back pain, swimming is a great way to help! It exercises your muscles, lungs, and heart. This zero impact activity is a great way to strengthen your body and back.

7. Lengthen Your Hamstrings. Tight hamstrings can cause lower back pain. Hamstrings often become tight from overuse, or sitting for extended periods of time. When they become tight, they create tension in the lower back. By simply stretching your hamstrings every day, you can reduce lower back pain. Give these stretches a try.

8. Bird Dog. Performing this exercise will help strengthen your core and glutes — two key players in relieving lower back pain!

9. Pilates Bridge. The Pilates bridge helps strengthen your glutes, hamstrings, and back muscles. Strengthening these areas will reduce lower back pain.

10. Stretch Your Glutes. The gluteus maximus is the largest muscle in your buttocks. The top edge of your gluteus maximus attaches to the membrane that protects your lower back muscles, the lumbodorsal fascia. If your glutes are tight, they can lead to lower back pain. Try these stretches to loosen up!

8 Natural Headache Remedies

9 out of 10 Americans suffer from headaches. Unfortunately, far too many people accept headaches as a normal part of life. Some people suffer from headaches frequently, while others only get them every now and again. Some headaches are dull and throbbing, others are sharp and debilitating. However the headache presents itself, it’s an indicator that something is “off” in your body.

Headaches can be triggered by subluxations in the spine, stress, fatigue, poor posture, hormones, allergies, poor lifestyle and diet choices, and more. Whatever the cause, it’s time to start paying attention to your body’s signals when a headache sets in.

Over the counter and prescription medications do not treat headaches at their source. They simply mask the symptoms. Natural remedies, such as chiropractic, locate the cause of your headache and treat the source. Here are 8 natural headache remedies to use the next time one of those annoying or painful headaches sets in!

brain-1845962_1920

1. Magnesium. People who suffer from headaches often have magnesium deficiencies in their diet. Increasing magnesium intake is proven to reduce frequency in headache and migraine attacks.

By taking 200-600mg of magnesium daily, the number of headaches and severity of headaches can be lessened. Diets high in magnesium include beans, whole grains, seeds, nuts, and fibrous vegetables such as broccoli, squash, and leafy greens.

Dairy, meat, chocolate, and coffee also contain good amounts of magnesium. Eat up!

2. Essential Oils. Essential oils are not new to the game in the world of holistic health. Many cultures have used essential oils for thousands of years in order to treat life’s ailments. Peppermint oil and lavender oil can be especially helpful when treating a headache.

Peppermint oil creates a cooling effect on the skin. It also stimulates an increase in skin blood flow of the forehead. It can even soothe muscle contractions.

Lavender oil is effectively used as a mood stabilizer and relaxant. A study done in 2012 showed that by just inhaling lavender oil for 15 minutes, of 129 headache attacks, 92 responded to the lavender oil remedy.

Use peppermint and lavender oil to treat your headaches by placing a few drops into your hands and rubbing the blend on your forehead, temples, and neck. You can also diffuse the combination of oils for aromatic treatment.

3. Chiropractic. Chiropractic is a safe, holistic, and effective way to treat headaches and migraines. When subluxations are present in the spine, the nervous system cannot function as it should. This can create pain throughout the body, that manifests itself in different ways. Headaches are often an indication of subluxations present in the spine.

Several clinical trials prove that spinal manipulation through chiropractic care can not only help treat, but may also help reduce headache frequency. Talk to Drs. Hohn today if you suffer from headaches. Pure Chiropractic can help!

4. Herbs. Feverfew and butterbur herbs have been used for thousands of years to relieve tension and headaches in the body. Plenty of research shows that consuming feverfew reduces the frequency of migraine headaches and their symptoms. You can purchase feverfew supplements as capsules, tablets, or liquid extracts, and researchers recommend consuming between 50-100mg of feverfew extract for headache relief.

Butterbur is known to reduce inflammation that can trigger headaches in the body. Researchers recommend around 75mg, twice a day, for the best headache reducing results.

5. B-Complex Vitamins. Several B vitamins help the formation of neurotransmitters that may be lacking in people who suffer from migraines. Unfortunately, many Americans are deficient in one or more of the B vitamins. This causes fatigue, headaches, and other nasty side effects.

B-complex vitamins include thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin B12, biotin, and pantothenic acid. Together, these all work together to boost immunity, boost circulation, improve mood, and even prevent headaches.

6. Hydration. Dehydration can be a major trigger to headaches. Too many of us pump our bodies full of caffeine, sugary drinks, and alcohol which actually dehydrate the body. The bottom line? Most Americans just aren’t getting enough water. Drinking water in and of itself can prevent or relieve headache pain. Aim to drink at least 64 oz of water each day.

You can also get some extra hydration by eating fruits and vegetables. Try adding these foods into your diet to help you stay hydrated!

  • cucumbers
  • celery
  • green peppers
  • cauliflower
  • eggplant
  • spinach
  • grapefruit
  • strawberries
  • oranges
  • cantaloupe
  • zucchini

7. Stretch and Move. Staying in the same position for too long can trigger a headache. Whether you’re stuck behind your desk, driving on a road trip, or texting your best friend, being stuck in the same position can lead to body tension and headaches.

In order to avoid headaches from this, make it a goal to take a break every 30 minutes to an hour. Get up and stretch — move your head and neck around — and take a little stroll. By incorporating stretching and movement into your day, you’ll release muscle tension, improve your posture, and clear your mind!

8. Cayenne Pepper. Cayenne pepper has been used for thousands of years as a holistic treatment option. Cayenne contains capsaicin, which is great for pain treatment and reducing inflammation. Cayenne works in treating headaches by reducing the bodily element, P, and stimulating a pain response in another area of the body.

When less substance P is presence in the body, pain signals no longer get sent to the brain, allowing relief. Many cultures use cayenne topically, in muscle rubs, in order to alleviate headaches and relax muscles.

Whiplash: Symptoms and Treatment

In the United States, over 2 million people suffer from whiplash injuries each year.

Typically associated with car accidents, whiplash can actually occur with any impact or blow that causes your head to jerk forward or backward.

This jerking motion strains the neck and the sudden force can injure bones in the spine, disks between the bones, ligaments, muscles, nerves, and other tissues in the neck.

Most people who experience whiplash recover within a few months. However, some people are impacted by the injury for several months or years.

Acting quickly when dealing with a whiplash injury helps speed up the healing process and reduces overall pain and swelling. Do not delay!

Studies show that the sooner someone visits a doctor after the injury, the shorter their recovery time. We highly recommend scheduling an appointment with the chiropractic within 24 hours of the accident!

What Causes Whiplash

When the head jerks beyond its usual range of motion, it pulls muscles and ligaments and causes their fibers to tear.

Any time a fiber is torn in a muscle or tendon, it’s called a strain. It this occurs in a ligament, it’s called a sprain. Whiplash usually involves both a strain and sprain. In extreme cases, it may also include fractures or dislocations.

This type of injury may result from auto accidents, a sudden blow to the head during sports or an altercation, a fall which causes the head to jolt backwards.

In order to treat whiplash promptly and effectively, we recommend scheduling an appointment with your chiropractor as soon as possible after the accident. Within 24 hours is best!

Whiplash Symptoms

Symptoms of whiplash usually present themselves within 24 hours of the accident, but typically show up within the first 6-12 hours! If left untreated, symptoms only worsen in the days following the injury.

Common symptoms of whiplash include: neck pain, dizziness, stiffness, headaches, pain with neck movement, tenderness in the upper back/shoulders/arms, fatigue, and tingling or numbness in the arms.

Less common symptoms include: lower back pain, muscle spasms, jaw pain, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, difficulty sleeping, irritability, memory problems, and difficulty concentrating.

Symptoms associated with whiplash are often made worse by sustained postures such as reading, driving, sitting at a computer, using a cell phone, or watching TV.

If you are currently experiencing any of these symptoms following an accident, please contact our offices today at (810) 588-4036 or email us at info(at)purechiropractor.com.

5 Natural Treatments for Whiplash

1. Chiropractic Adjustments. Spinal adjustments done by a doctor of chiropractic will help restore normal joint movement and function in your neck.

By treating the subluxations in your spine, Dr. Hohn can treat your whiplash pain at its source.

This will decrease your recovery time and restore function to your nerves quickly, allowing your body to recover faster.

Chiropractic adjustments can reduce your pain levels and help you feel better faster!

2. Massage. In combination with chiropractic care, massage can be a beneficial treatment for whiplash injuries.

A massage by a trained therapist can help relieve pain and discomfort associated with whiplash. There are 3 types of massage are often used for whiplash treatment.

The first type of massage is called myofascial release. Myofascial release techniques help loosen restricted neck muscles and fascia to improve range of motion that often decreases with whiplash.

The second type of massage is called static compression. Applying static compression to the affected trigger points increases oxygen flow to the impacted muscles. This increased flow of oxygen helps muscles heal faster.

The third type of massage is called deep tissue massage. Deep tissue massage helps release deep fascia, adhesions, and scar tissue that may occur with a whiplash injury. This type of massage will help free up tissue that has tightened around local nerves in the neck and back.

Make sure to tell the massage therapist your pain level before receiving any type of treatment!

3. Essential oils. Essential oils are a great way to naturally treat muscle soreness in whiplash injuries.

Try applying just a few drops of oil to the affected area and gently massage the oils into the skin. Try the following essential oils to help with your whiplash pain:

Wintergreen oil. Wintergreen oils serves as an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic agent. It provides a warm sensation to the tender area and helps increase circulation in the damaged areas.

Blue tansy oil. Blue tansy oil has pain relieving properties and works as an anti-inflammatory.

Camphor oil. Camphor oil works as a natural pain reliever and anti-inflammatory. Apply a few drops to the sore areas and relax.

Marjoram oil. Marjoram oil works to decrease muscle spasms by relaxing the muscles. It also increases blood circulation, allowing the muscles to get the nutrients they need to heal.

Lavender oil. Lavender oil helps relax tense muscles and improve blood flow. It also helps lower stress levels, aiding in both physical and mental recovery from whiplash.

4. Ice and Heat. Applying ice to the neck and shoulders after an accident will help reduce swelling and pain. Apply ice for 20 minutes at a time. You can do this every hour if needed for the first 48 to 72 hours after the accident.

After that, apply heat in the same intervals to help relax the muscles and restore range of motion to the affected areas.

5. Exercises. There are several exercises one can do to help recover from a whiplash injury. Try these simple exercises to help your injuries heal faster and to regain normal range of motion.

Ear to Shoulder: Stand up straight and look straight ahead. Try to touch your ear to your shoulder. Repeat on the other side. Be sure to keep your shoulders relaxed as you do this movement.

Shoulder Look: While standing up straight and looking forward, turn your head and try to look over each shoulder in turn.

Ceiling Stretch: Look up toward the ceiling as if you’re trying to point your chin to the ceiling. Next look down while tucking your chin to your chest.

Shoulder Shrug: Shrug your shoulders while breathing in and then relax them while breathing out. This will stretch your shoulder muscles and relax your neck. If you’re able, roll you shoulders as you do this stretch.

Arm Circles: Circle your arms, one at a time, like you’re doing the backstroke. This will help restore range of motion while loosening your muscles.

10 Researched Benefits of Chiropractic

Chiropractic is an incredible, drug-free alternative to traditional health care. Millions of people around the world have experienced the amazing benefits of chiropractic and have reported incredible benefits. Most of the benefits of seeing a doctor of chiropractic come from chiropractic adjustments.

Vertebrae Anatomy with Ciculatory System

A chiropractic adjustment aims to remove a vertebral subluxation from the spine. Vertebral subluxations can be caused by:

  • Misalignments in the vertebra due to a slip or fall
  • An inflammatory response caused by poor diet, stress, or dehydration
  • Poor posture
  • Joint swelling
  • Trigger points or tight muscles pulling the vertebrae out of place

Chiropractic is about far more than treating back pain — a great chiropractor treats the whole patient. Here are some of the amazing results from years of medical research, and the studies that show the proven benefits of chiropractic:

1. Sciatica

The European Spine Journal published findings from a clinical trial last year that stated that chiropractic adjustments resulted in a 72 percent success rate in treating sciatica and other related symptoms, compared to the 20 percent success rate from physical therapy, and 50 percent success rate from corticosteroid injections.

Chiropractic care offers a natural, safe, and effective way to treat sciatica pain!

2. Low Back Pain and Neck Pain

The British Medical Journal released a study in 2003 that focused on 183 patients with neck pain. These patients were randomly assigned to manual therapy (spinal mobilization), physiotherapy (primarily exercise), or general practitioner care (counseling, education, and drugs) in a year long study.

The clinical results showed that chiropractic adjustments resulted in faster recovery than both physiotherapy and general practitioner care. Also, the total costs of the patients treated with chiropractic was 1/3 the costs of physiotherapy or general practitioner care!

In a study funded by NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine to test the effectiveness of different approaches for treating neck pain, 272 study participants were split into three groups. One group received spinal manipulative therapy from a doctor of chiropractic, one group received pain medication (over-the-counter, narcotics, and muscle relaxants), and one group was given exercise recommendations.

After 12 weeks, nearly 57 percent of study participants who met with chiropractors, and 48 percent who exercised, reported at least a 75 percent reduction in pain. Only 33 percent of people in the medication group reported at least a 75 percent reduction in pain.

After one year, nearly 53 percent of participants in the drug-free groups still reported at least a 75 percent pain reduction, while only 38 percent of those who took medication reported the same.

3. Athletic Performance

Did you know that every single NFL team has a chiropractor on staff? And that incredible athletes such as Michael Phelps and Jordan Spieth are under regular chiropractic care?

Chiropractic is incredibly effective at pain-based and pathological conditions. Studies have proven that regular chiropractic care can:

  • Reduce inflammation
  • Boost the immune system
  • Enhance pulmonary function
  • Decrease mental and oxidative stress
  • Relieve muscle tension
  • Increase energy levels

Wouldn’t your athletic performance improve with those results?

4. Scoliosis

Chiropractic adjustments, coupled with muscular rehabilitation, may help prevent the progression of scoliosis. Chiropractic adjustments and therapies help to improve form and function, and induce mobility to the joints. These improvements can decrease pain, increase comfort and improve posture.

An expert in the musculoskeletal system, your Dr. Hohn offers invaluable insight and treatment options for his patients. Chiropractic care can help stop or diminish further degeneration of the spine, while helping improve overall function of the body.

5. Headaches

Headaches are the second most common condition chiropractors regularly manage (back pain is the first). There are over 230 peer-reviewed research articles out there that reference chiropractic’s ability to help cure, prevent, and ease headaches and migraines!

One trial found that 22 percent of patients who received chiropractic treatment saw the number of headaches drop by 90 percent. NINETY PERCENT! In that same study, 49 percent of patients said they had an incredible reduction in headache pain intensity.

6. Colic and Ear Infections

The Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics found that chiropractic adjustments greatly reduced colic symptoms. It’s truly incredible how the nervous system controls every single cell in the body, and if a child’s spine is out of alignment, their body cannot function the way it was intended!

Also, scores of case studies have been conducted that describe how children suffering from ear infections, acid reflux, and colic experience incredible relief from chiropractic adjustments. With ear infections being the number one reason children visit the pediatrician, it’s time to give chiropractic the chance to heal the body naturally, and without the side effects of antibiotics.

7. Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder is stiffness, pain, and limited range of movement in the shoulder. It can happen as the result of an injury, from overuse, from a stroke, or even from diabetes. The tissues around the shoulder joint stiffen, scar tissue forms, and shoulder movement becomes incredibly difficult and painful.

A clinical trial was published last year that showed how patients suffering from frozen shoulder responded to chiropractic care. 50 patients were studied. 16 patients saw their frozen shoulder completely resolved. 25 patients showed a 75-90 percent improvement. 8 showed a 50 percent to 75 percent improvement. Only 1 patient showed 0 to 50 percent improvement.

8. Surgery Prevention

Chiropractic has long been hailed by natural healthcare professionals as a natural method to prevent back surgery. According to the American Chiropractic Association, workers with back injuries whose first point of contact was a surgeon or MD had a 42.7 percent likelihood of having surgery, while those who saw a chiropractic as a first point of contact only had a 1.5 percent chance of surgery!

9. Blood Pressure

In 2007, George Bakris, an expert in the field of hypertension, published a study with a team of researchers from the Human Journal of Hypertension. This study found that just one upper cervical chiropractic adjustment had the same effect as two blood pressure-lowering drugs! AND the effects of just one adjustment lasted more than 6 months!

Patients who received chiropractic adjustments compared to those who received placebo treatments saw an average 14mm Hg greater drop in systolic blood pressure (top number in blood pressure count) and an average 8 mm Hg greater drop in diastolic blood pressure (bottom number in blood pressure count).

10. Neurological Conditions

Current and ongoing research via upright MRIs shows how upper cervical adjustments affect various brain-based conditions. So far, MRI scans have revealed that cerebral spinal fluid and blood flow are markedly increased after a chiropractic adjustment, and that cerebellar invagination (where the cerebellum drops down below the skull line) is being reversed, while brain plaquing, common among multiple sclerosis patients, is disappearing altogether.
